Earlier this year, Arteriors debuted a collection by Windsor Smith.  Featuring Windsor’s iconic style, a luxurious blend of traditional and modern sensibilities, the collection is comprised of items that are as functional as they are sophisticated.  Windsor has created a line with the goal, as she states, “for…each piece [to] engage conversation.  I want these to be well loved now and heirlooms tomorrow.”

I love the geometric look of the pieces Windsor Smith designed for Arteriors.  Each item looks very chic; you can see the influence of traditional aesthetics and classical Greek and Roman design, although the overall look of the line is quite modern.

Another great aspect to this line is the mix of materials found in many of the pieces.  This blending of textures and finishes lends to the line’s elegance and timelessness.

This design scheme came about while I was working with an existing client, brainstorming ideas for their dining room.

This design scheme came about while I was working with an existing client, brainstorming ideas for their dining room.  I wanted to do something glamorous.  The adjacent family room and kitchen included a lot of yellow, so for the dining room I decided to insert some brass for a touch of glimmer.  The room is somewhat small and intimate, so I wanted to smother it in saffron.  I thought of silk walls, saturated drapes, and a pure gradation of the same tone.  The light fixture is something I really fell in love with.  Because the plan for the walls and window treatments is monochromatic, the rug provides contrast.  The resulting scheme has a depth of color reminiscent of summer and happiness.

Lindsey Adelman Studio

One source I really love for beautiful, custom lighting is Lindsay Adelman Studio.

Lighting is an important element of an interior, from both a practical standpoint and an aesthetic one.  Lighting sets a mood in any room, but is also an opportunity to dress up a space.  One source I really love for beautiful, custom lighting is Lindsay Adelman Studio.  What I love about her fixtures is that they have somewhat of an organic essence to them, even though they are metal and glass.  There’s something precise and graceful about them.

These highly artistic pieces aren’t just lights, they’re sculptures.  Each piece is hand crafted in her Brooklyn, NY studio from blown glass and precisely machined metal.  A team of local artisans create each piece to order from designs based on natural forms, and each is available in a variety of finishes.  The balance of each piece must be precise.  Because each element is custom made and unique, the various components have to be assembled and exactly balanced for weight differences.  The skill and artistry that goes into this lighting is simply incredible.

I find her new collection has a little bit of whimsy and playfulness to it.  It is striking and peaceful at the same time.

Stephen Antonson

Stephen Antonson is a true artist, creating beautiful and unique items with plaster at his Brooklyn, NY, atelier.

Stephen Antonson is a true artist, creating beautiful and unique items with plaster at his Brooklyn, NY, atelier.  His furnishings, lighting, and accessories are sculpted by hand using a meticulous process that results in objects with an incredible combination of simplicity and elegance.

I’ve seen Antonson’s work in interiors by other designers, and it always catches my eye.  It reminds me of Giacometti’s techniques, with the iconic white color reminiscent of John Dickinson’s work in the 1970s.  A trained painter and sculptor, Antonson’s Brooklyn studio is a place I would love to see.  I am fascinated by the places where people tinker, explore, and create.

What an inspiration!

I find Antonson’s designs invigorating and innovative.  To me, plaster is a peaceful medium and adds a smooth texture to the space.  It is  completely different medium to add to an interior.

With a medium like plaster, the sky is the limit.  I love the idea of taking something you see and like, then adapting it to plaster.  Antonson’s lighting designs perfectly exemplify the potential of plaster.  They are so clever.

In addition to his plaster work, Antonson creates art for his home and his family.  He authored a book with his wife titled Home from the Hardware Store which demonstrates how to build household goods from common hardware store purchases.  You can also see more of Antonson’s plaster work on his website or find him on Facebook.

Favorite Things: Chandeliers

A chandelier should be playful, like jewelry for the room.

When choosing chandeliers, I’ve lately been drawn to pieces that are not your typical eight, ten, or twelve bulb lighting element.  I enjoying finding chandeliers that are composed of different heights or clusters of pendants.  Even in a traditional space, a modern nod can lighten up the setting.  A chandelier should be playful, like jewelry for the room.   I also like the idea of installing a vintage chandelier, something with history.  Here are some of my favorite examples of really great chandeliers:

1.  Bocci 14 Series:  Serves as decorative artwork as well as a light source.

2.   Infinity Cluster:  This pendant light fixture by John Pomp Studios has 15 hand-blown sculpted glass canopies at different heights.  Absolutely beautiful!  Plus, the options are endless.

Favorite Things: Modern Elements

When it comes to interior design, the term “modern” can mean different things to different people.

When it comes to interior design, the term “modern” can mean different things to different people.  To me, it means using newer, refreshing elements.  These items can be mixed with more traditional design for a bit of added flair or an eclectic feel, or can be used on their own.  This list of my favorite pieces could be used to create a beautiful space, or individual items could be worked into a room to give it a bit of a modern edge.
