Planters

One great way to incorporate greenery is with planters.

Sometimes the spring/summer season sneaks up on you, but you can’t neglect the task of beautifying your patio or deck.  One great way to incorporate greenery is with planters.  With such a range of sizes and styles available, you can really say something with planters.

When choosing planters, you can find something that provides contrast or select pieces that blend with the architecture, outdoors or indoors.  There is such a variety of textures, colors, and shapes of planters –big pots filled with gorgeous plants make a major statement in a great room or sun room.  Or, you can group smaller planters together on a wall, the stairs, or a console.

You can further customize planters with what you fill them with.  The contents of your planters have just as much potential for variety, from flowers and herbs to trees and tall grasses.  When choosing plants, take into consideration their height, texture, and color.  Some plants repel pests while others make pleasant sounds when the wind moves through them.

Windsor Smith Collection for Arteriors

Earlier this year, Arteriors debuted a collection by Windsor Smith.

Earlier this year, Arteriors debuted a collection by Windsor Smith.  Featuring Windsor’s iconic style, a luxurious blend of traditional and modern sensibilities, the collection is comprised of items that are as functional as they are sophisticated.  Windsor has created a line with the goal, as she states, “for…each piece [to] engage conversation.  I want these to be well loved now and heirlooms tomorrow.”

I love the geometric look of the pieces Windsor Smith designed for Arteriors.  Each item looks very chic; you can see the influence of traditional aesthetics and classical Greek and Roman design, although the overall look of the line is quite modern.

Another great aspect to this line is the mix of materials found in many of the pieces.  This blending of textures and finishes lends to the line’s elegance and timelessness.

What Inspires Me: Feathers

I love the look of feathers, especially how intricate and saturated the colors can be.

I love the look of feathers, especially how intricate and saturated the colors can be.  You get such a sultry, silky feel with feathers.  When I think of feathers, I think layers, texture, and tonality.

FeathersFeathers 10Feathers 3Imagine how thrilled I was when a client who is building a home in Montana brought up the idea of incorporating feathers into her interior!  Sometimes it’s funny the way things come full circle.

Feathers can be present in small doses as an accent, such as a lampshade.  It would make a dynamite back wall for a bookcase, or in a piece of art.

Method Monday

This design scheme came about while I was working with an existing client, brainstorming ideas for their dining room.

This design scheme came about while I was working with an existing client, brainstorming ideas for their dining room.  I wanted to do something glamorous.  The adjacent family room and kitchen included a lot of yellow, so for the dining room I decided to insert some brass for a touch of glimmer.  The room is somewhat small and intimate, so I wanted to smother it in saffron.  I thought of silk walls, saturated drapes, and a pure gradation of the same tone.  The light fixture is something I really fell in love with.  Because the plan for the walls and window treatments is monochromatic, the rug provides contrast.  The resulting scheme has a depth of color reminiscent of summer and happiness.

This past weekend, I took a stroll through the Antique and Artisan Gallery and Hiden Galleries in Stamford.  With over 20,000 square feet and dozens of prominent dealers, the Antique and Artisan Gallery is a treasure trove of incredible antiques.  I could spend days browsing the various vignettes and never get tired of finding new items to love.  Here are some of my favorite finds:

Today’s Method Monday features a neutral scheme based on a grey palette.  I love this combination of fabrics and furnishings for the variety of textures.  The use of white elements brightens everything up and the overall feel is modern and sleek, but comfortable.

Rox by CJ Designs

When shopping at Bungalow, a great shop in Westport, CT, I found a line of gorgeous decorative boxes.  I actually bought one for my mom for Christmas, an acrylic box topped with malachite.   These boxes are just so cool.
